Department Introduction
In design & technology pupils combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make products and systems that meet human needs. They learn to use current technologies and consider the impact of future technological developments. They learn to think creatively and intervene to improve the quality of life, solving problems as individuals and members of a team. Through design and technology pupils develop confidence in using practical skills and become discriminating users of products. They apply their creative thinking and learn to innovate.

KS3 – Technology at Millom School
Pupils learn and undertake activities that contribute to the achievement of the curriculum aims for all young people: to become successful learners who enjoy learning, making progress and achieve; confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives; responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society.
In Years 7, 8 and 9 pupils experience all areas of the Design and Technology Department through a carousel system. Time is spent in each of the four areas: Food; Resistant Materials; Graphics with CAD/CAM and Textiles.
KS4 – Technology at Millom School
We offer two courses. One in Design and Technology (AQA) and a Level 1 / 2 Award in Hospitality and Catering (WJEC).
Design and Technology:
GCSE Design and Technology will prepare students to participate confidently and successfully in an increasingly technological world. Students will gain awareness and learn from wider influences on Design and Technology including historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic factors. Students will get the opportunity to work creatively when designing and making and learn to apply technical and practical expertise. The course also allows students to study core technical, designing and making principles. This new specification integrates all aspects of design and technology including resistant materials, textiles, product design and systems. Under the curriculum reforms, separate GCSE qualifications in resistant materials and textiles are no longer on offer.
Hospitality and Catering:
In Hospitality and Catering students will gain knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating. It encourages learners to make informed decisions about food and nutrition along with acquiring the knowledge in order to be able to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now and later in life.
KS5 – Science at Millom School
We offer one courses. One is an A Level/AS Level in Product Design (AQA)
Design and Technology: Product Design
This course helps students take a broad view of design and technology, develop their capacity to design and make products and appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing.
