Humanities: Geography

Geography at Millom School

The Geography Department aims to make a positive contribution to the school curriculum by stimulating the curiosity of the students about the natural and human world. At the same time they are introduced to people, places and environments across a range of scales.
The emphasis placed on Geographical skills is present at all levels of study as the aim is to encourage Geographical enquiry both inside the classroom and through practical fieldwork. Students develop the ability to interpret, analyse and critically evaluate information, ideas and differing viewpoints. In addition all students are encouraged to improve their communication skills through oral, written and graphical presentation. They draw on a wide range of information sources and resources including each other, photographs, maps, written and audio-visual materials and ICT.

KS3 – Geography at Millom School

At Millom School we believe that geography education should develop students’ knowledge and understanding of people and places, whilst stimulating an interest in and an appreciation of the world around us. This in turn encourages an informed concern for the natural environment on a local, national and global scale. The Key Stage 3 curriculum introduces pupils to the skills needed to successfully complete geographical study, placing particular emphasis on fieldwork and geographical enquiry.
In Year 9 students receive two one hour Geography lessons each week, whilst in Years 7 and 8 they receive one lesson per week.
In Year 7 students study the local area whilst at the same time developing the ability to read Ordnance Survey maps accurately. They also complete units of work that compare the physical and human geography of countries at varying stages of economic development. These countries include Brazil, Russia and Kenya.
In Year 8 students learn about the physical processes that shape our coastline and influence changes seen in the course of rivers. They also study weather hazards considering the impact of these hazards on countries including China and India. The advantages and disadvantages of tourism are also considered in a unit of study that examines the importance of this industry in different locations.
In Year 9 students study the theory of plate tectonics, making links between this theory and tectonic hazards including both volcanoes and earthquakes. Another area of physical geography covered includes glaciation and its impact on the Cumbrian landscape. In addition students consider changing patterns and structures resulting from global population growth and its links to settlement patterns.

KS4 – Geography at Millom School
Geography students follow the OCR ‘A’ specification. This course builds on the skills learnt in Years 7, 8 and 9, providing students with new challenges and opportunities to develop more advanced skills appropriate for a GCSE geographer. GCSE Geography is taught in mixed ability groups with all students receiving three one hour lessons each week.

OCRGCSEGEO

KS5 – Geography at Millom School
